A set of two brown glass bottles from AVON. The first bottle, featuring a vintage horse-head chess piece, was originally a men's cologne bottle; the second, made of amber glass, is shaped like a Setter (hunting dog).
Very good condition except for a chip at the base of the dog stopper (see photo)
In 1886, David H. McConnell founded the California Perfume Company, which would become Avon, in New York City. As an unsuccessful book salesman, he concocted a rose perfume as a "free gift" to encourage people to buy his books. The perfume was so popular that McConnell decided to abandon the book business and start a perfume company. The company changed its name to Avon in 1939 in honor of Shakespeare's hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon.
