Set of 2 AVON brand bottles, in brown glass. The first bottle, shaped like a vintage chess piece with a horse's head, was originally a men's cologne bottle; the second, in amber glass, is shaped like a dog.
Very good condition
In 1886, David H. McConnell founded the California Perfume Company, which would later become Avon, in New York City. As a struggling bookseller, he had concocted a rose-scented perfume as a "free gift" to encourage people to buy his books. The fragrance was so popular that McConnell decided to abandon the book trade and start a perfume business. The company changed its name to Avon in 1939 in honor of Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon.
