Splendid 14-piece matching tea service, very fine Satsuma porcelain, the motif depicts a geisha playing an instrument, the colours are very vibrant. Polychrome decoration and gilt highlights. SUPERB CONDITION.
The pieces are decorated with a dragon, and include: a teapot, a sugar bowl and a creamer, four cups and saucers. I am including an extra cup without a saucer.
At the bottom of each cup, the Geisha's eyes follow you like those of the Mona Lisa! Geisha lithophane cups were made from the late 1800s to the 1950s. The cups are thin, and the image found at the bottom of the cup is created using varying thicknesses of porcelain. Most of these porcelain cups are made in the Kutani region of Japan. The images above show what is commonly referred to as a "unique geisha," with a classic Japanese hairstyle. In some versions, the geisha's hair is adorned with chopsticks, garlands, or flowers.
